ABOUT ELDERZEST • SUMMARY OF ORGANIZATION MISSION: The mission of ElderZest is to promote a more positive image of aging and provide encouragement and support for maturing adults so they can live more meaningful and purposeful lives. Research: Staying abreast of the latest theories and research on aging; reviewing and integrating current information; and sponsoring and encouraging collaboration and sharing of new information on aging and elders. Education: Presenting a new vision of aging and elders and confronting stereotypes and erroneous beliefs. Education occurs through a speakers’ bureau and by providing workshops, forums, TV and radio shows, as well as written material. Services: Providing facilitative services to individuals and organizations such as social groups, religious organizations, and businesses. ElderZest promotes dialogue with lay and professional communities and participates in aging forums, conferences, and events. • SUMMARY OF ORGANIZATION HISTORY In 1997, a group of people with common interest were called together. They believed that old age was more a time of opportunity than of decline. This group met monthly for the next two years, talking, arguing, and envisioning what they could do to change the image of aging. In 1998, the group incorporated as ElderZest and received 501 (c) 3 status in 2002. ElderZest seeks to change the image of aging and provide support and encouragement for maturing adults to live meaningful and purposeful lives. ElderZest focuses on emerging research, education, and service. This is done largely through workshops, lectures, forums, and other educational efforts at conferences, colleges, senior housing facilities, churches, and companies. As of mid-2003, members of the board of directors and ad hoc committees served on a volunteer basis, helped by a largely volunteer part-time administrative assistant. Previous to the fall of 2003, ElderZest had made no formal effort to raise money but had received nominal donations from interested parties.
